ROSEMARY
Rosemary gives a perfume an herbal direction, with a clear freshness that can suggest crushed aromatic leaves. Depending on the material, that freshness may feel minty-green or camphorous: cool and penetrating, with a drier woody side underneath. It offers a different kind of brightness from sweet fruit or citrus juice.
The plant is Salvia rosmarinus, also widely labelled Rosmarinus officinalis. Its leaves and flowering tops provide distilled essential oils, while other extracts also exist. Oils are sold in different chemotypes, meaning forms distinguished by their chemical profiles, so rosemary is not one unvarying scent. It can support lavender or pine notes and bring an herbal edge to a woody composition. A rosemary note alone does not confirm a natural oil in the formula; explore the surrounding notes to judge how crisp, green or warm the finished perfume feels.
