SANDALWOOD
Sandalwood has a smooth woody character often described as creamy, with gentle sweetness and warmth. It can soften a floral composition or give spices a rounded woody setting. Some interpretations feel rich and milky, others drier or fresher; creamy describes the scent’s texture rather than the presence of dairy.
Natural sandalwood oils come from several Santalum species. Santalum album, Santalum spicatum and Santalum austrocaledonicum provide different materials, and a country label does not always identify the species: Santalum album is also grown in Australia. Steam distillation of the wood is one established production method. Perfumers also use sandalwood-scented molecules and combinations of materials, so the listed note does not prove a particular natural oil is present. Explore the balance of woody dryness, softness and sweetness in the complete fragrance.
