SKATOLE

Skatole has a forceful animalic smell, often described as faecal or civet-like. Its value in perfume lies in what that challenging character can contribute within a blend: a small, carefully balanced presence can give a floral accord an earthy, less polished underside. It is especially associated with jasmine-style compositions, where animalic shading can make the flowers feel fuller rather than simply clean or sweet.

Chemically, skatole is 3-methylindole, a specific molecule related to indole rather than another name for it. Perfumery literature documents its use in floral bases; it should not be confused with a soft white musk or with natural civet extract. The name on a fragrance page does not mean the whole perfume smells faecal, nor does it disclose the amount or source used. The surrounding formula determines whether its darker character is noticeable.
