SLATE

Slate is a mineral impression in perfume, suggesting the austere texture of stone and the atmosphere of rain on a dark roof. It can give a composition a cooler, less sweet counterpoint to warm woods, resins or smoke. Think of a stony setting around the other notes rather than one clearly identifiable flower, fruit or spice.

Tiziana Terenzi describes slate within a rainy urban scene for Laudano Nero, alongside woods, resins and the image of a fire on wet streets. That is a useful example of the idea, not a recipe for every slate accord. The note name does not establish that the rock has been extracted or that particular aroma molecules are present. Its mineral character is part of the perfumer’s interpretation and may feel wetter, drier or smokier according to the surrounding composition.
