STAR ANISE (INDIA)

Star anise from India refers to the familiar sweet, liquorice-like spice with an Indian geographic designation. Its aromatic bite can sit over a warm, woody undertone, giving contrast to citrus or extending the sweet spice character of a composition. The country name does not by itself define a separate botanical variety or guarantee a different smell from star anise grown elsewhere.

The spice is the star-shaped fruit of Illicium verum. India’s Spices Board records small-scale production in Arunachal Pradesh, rather than the southern Indian growing story sometimes attached to this note. Star-anise fruit can yield essential oil by steam distillation, with anethole contributing strongly to its characteristic aroma. The note label alone does not verify the origin of the material in an individual perfume. Extraction, quality and the full formula remain relevant to the final effect.
