TOLU BALSAM
Tolu balsam gives perfume a warm, resinous sweetness with a vanilla-like aspect. The balsam comes from Myroxylon balsamum, and perfumery materials include an absolute. Its scent has affinities with benzoin and Peru balsam, though those names should not be treated as interchangeable ingredients. Here, balsamic describes a rounded resinous smell, not the sourness of balsamic vinegar.
The note can give body to an amber composition or bring a soft, sweet background to flowers. Ormonde Jayne’s Tolu illustrates an amber setting with frankincense and tonka bean alongside floral notes. That is one interpretation, not a formula for every tolu perfume. The type of material, its proportion and its companions determine how prominent the resin feels. A listed tolu note also does not identify the extract or confirm a particular country of sourcing.
