TRUFFLE

Truffle in perfume evokes the earthy, savoury aroma of the culinary fungus. Here the name refers to the underground-growing truffle, rather than a chocolate confection. Its appeal lies in a sense of earth and organic richness that can interrupt a smooth floral composition with something less conventionally sweet.

A perfume can create this impression through a truffle accord, a combination of scent materials. Tom Ford, for example, describes the black truffle accord in Black Orchid Reserve as earthy, alongside floral, patchouli and roasted tonka notes. That is one interpretation, not a recipe shared by every truffle fragrance. The note name alone identifies neither a particular truffle species nor the presence of a natural extract. Look at the surrounding notes to understand whether the earthy effect supports a floral bouquet or a warmer composition.
