VANILLA (BOURBON)

Bourbon vanilla suggests rounded vanilla sweetness, often with a creamy impression and balsamic warmth. The name is associated with Vanilla planifolia grown in the Indian Ocean region, notably Madagascar and Réunion. It does not denote a different orchid species from ordinary planifolia, nor does it mean that the vanilla smells of bourbon whiskey.

The word comes from Île Bourbon, the former name of Réunion, not Madagascar. Curing the harvested pods develops their familiar aroma, which can be brought into perfumery through different extracts. Bourbon therefore describes a tradition and geographical designation rather than one extraction method or a standard perfume formula. Its warm sweetness can support flowers or a gourmand accord, but the exact character depends on the material and the composition. The label alone does not guarantee that a finished fragrance contains naturally extracted Bourbon vanilla.
