VETIVER (MADAGASCAR)

Madagascar vetiver can offer a dry, woody scent with an earthy root character and a smoky accent. Producers on the island document this profile in their essential oils, with some describing only a light smoke. It is therefore more useful to picture a woody texture with variable smoke than to assume a uniformly dark or heavy note.

The oil is distilled from the roots of Chrysopogon zizanioides, a grass cultivated in Madagascar. Producer records distinguish the harvested roots, their origin and the extraction: these details matter more than broad claims about island quality. Essential oil and other vetiver extracts can differ, and the note name does not identify a particular preparation. In perfume, its dry character can lend texture around brighter or softer notes. The amount used and the rest of the composition determine its prominence and persistence.
