CUMIN

Cumin brings a pungent, green-spicy character with warm, sometimes resinous facets. Its more unusual side can recall warm skin or perspiration, giving it a different impression from a simply sweet baking spice. This animalic description concerns the smell: cumin seed oil is a botanical material, not an animal-derived musk.

The plant is Cuminum cyminum. Fragrance suppliers document oil distilled from its seeds; Robertet specifies steam distillation or hydrodistillation for its Egyptian material. Fraterworks describes the seed oil’s skin-like warmth and its use alongside rich rose, jasmine and other spices. In a finished perfume, that facet may be a subtle undertone or a more apparent contrast, depending on the composition. A cumin note does not mean every fragrance smells of sweat, nor does the label alone establish the exact oil used.
