ELEMI
Elemi combines bright citrus-like freshness with peppery, aromatic resin. Its woody and incense-like facets give the scent more texture than a simple citrus note, while the fresh side can keep a resinous composition from feeling entirely dark. Think of a meeting between zest, spice and pale resin rather than assuming a burnt or heavily smoky effect.
The perfumery material is associated with the gum-resin of Canarium luzonicum. IFF’s LMR elemi oil comes from the Philippines and is obtained by hydrodistilling the gum-resin; it is not a citrus peel oil despite its fresh character. In a composition, elemi can connect brighter notes with woods or incense. The amount used and the surrounding materials determine how prominently its peppery or resinous facets emerge, so the note name alone does not predict strength or longevity.
