LENTISK (MASTIC TREE)
Lentisk, also called mastic tree, offers a green, aromatic theme with resinous and woody facets. Oil from its leaves and twigs can smell herbal and earthy, with a conifer-like freshness over warmer wood. This can suggest leafy scrubland rather than a sweet pistachio dessert, despite the plant’s relationship to pistachio. In perfume, lentisk may connect bright citrus with a greener, more resinous impression or add definition to woods.
The plant is Pistacia lentiscus, an evergreen shrub. It supplies different fragrant materials: leaves and twigs can be distilled for essential oil, while its resin, known as mastic, is another source. These materials should not be treated as identical. A leaf oil may emphasise greenery, whereas a resin-derived oil can lean towards woody and coniferous facets.
