OPOPONAX
Opoponax offers warm, balsamic resin character with woody depth, but its scent is not simply sweet. Different preparations reveal different facets. Robertet describes its absolute as balsamic, woody and animalic, while its distilled oil combines amber-like warmth with milky, buttery and mushroom-like nuances. Biolandes places its oil in a coniferous, terpenic family, pointing to a fresher resin edge.
These materials come from the gum-resin of Commiphora erythraea; both suppliers document Somali sourcing. Steam distillation produces an essential oil, while solvent extraction followed by alcohol purification produces an absolute. In perfume, opoponax can add rounded resin warmth beside woods or leather. The exact balance of sweetness, earthiness and freshness depends on the chosen material and the full composition, not merely the note name.
