SMOKY NOTES

Smoky notes suggest burning wood, a lingering trace of fire or a darker, leathery edge. They can feel dry and sharp, but a composition may soften that impression with sweet or balsamic notes. A little smoke can roughen the smoothness of a floral or woody perfume; a stronger presence may put the fire-like character at the centre.

Smoke is an olfactory effect rather than one ingredient. The IFRA fragrance glossary documents smoky facets in materials including cade oil, guaiac wood oil and guaiacol, each with a different accompanying character. A fireplace interpretation can also bring sweetness: Maison Margiela pairs its woody fire theme with chestnut and vanilla accords. These are examples, not requirements. Smoke and smoky notes overlap as labels, and neither specifies the formula, the source of the materials or the strength of a finished perfume.
