HAZEL WOOD

Hazel Wood is a soft, nutty-woody note in perfumery inspired by the wood and branches of the hazel tree (Corylus species). Its scent is smooth, slightly nutty, and gently dry, blending nuances of pale wood, roasted hazelnut, and subtle earthy warmth. Less sharp than cedar and less creamy than sandalwood, Hazel Wood carries a balanced woody-starchy character with a mild sweetness that evokes fresh branches, cracked hazelnuts, and forest undergrowth in early autumn. Used primarily as a heart or base note, it adds warmth, texture, and a natural woody softness to gourmand, woody, and aromatic compositions.

History & Production: The hazel tree has been cultivated across Europe and Western Asia for centuries, valued for its edible hazelnuts and flexible wood. In perfumery, however, the Hazel Wood note is usually recreated as an olfactory accord, since the wood itself produces little aromatic oil suitable for extraction. Perfumers often combine nutty facets, light woody molecules, and creamy or cereal-like nuances to reproduce the scent associated with hazelnuts and hazel branches. In fragrance design, Hazel Wood blends beautifully with vanilla, cocoa, amber, and woods, creating a warm, comforting base—the scent of sun-dried branches and roasted hazelnuts drifting through a quiet woodland.
