LIVING STALLION™
Living Stallion™ is an unusual animalic perfumery creation developed by IFF using headspace technology to capture and reconstruct the olfactory impression of a living horse. Its scent is warm, musky, leathery, and softly animalic, blending impressions of warm horse skin, clean hide, mane, suede, hay, subtle perspiration, and earthy stable warmth. Unlike aggressively animalic materials such as civet or traditional castoreum effects, Living Stallion™ is described as possessing a softer and warmer character, emphasizing the intimate warmth of the living animal rather than harsh barnyard facets. The balance of skin-like musk, equine warmth, soft leather, and restrained animalic depth creates an unusually tactile effect that evokes a horse's coat warmed by the body beneath it. Used primarily as a heart note, it contributes sensuality, organic warmth, leather-like texture, and a distinctive living-animal effect to leather, tobacco, woody, musk, and equestrian-inspired fragrances.
History & Production: Living Stallion™ is not a conventional animal-derived extraction. Perfumer Carlos Benaïm of IFF explained that the fragrance effect was developed using headspace technology, through which scientists analyze volatile molecules surrounding a real-world odor source and reconstruct its olfactory profile without requiring the source itself to become a traditional perfume extract. Benaïm notably used Living Stallion in Edward Bess's Genre, and the material/effect has subsequently appeared by name in other fine fragrances. Its exact formula is proprietary. In fragrance design, Living Stallion™ pairs naturally with suede, tobacco, iris, saffron, hay, oakmoss, labdanum, cedarwood, frankincense, vanilla, and leather accords, creating an intimate equestrian signature—the scent of a living stallion's warm coat and mane mingling with soft leather and hay, musky, tactile, and quietly untamed.
