OUD/AGARWOOD (VIETNAM)

Oud/Agarwood (Vietnam) is one of the most prized woody notes in perfumery, derived from the resin-infused heartwood of Aquilaria trees grown in Vietnam. Its scent is rich, deep, and highly complex, blending facets of dark wood, warm balsamic sweetness, soft smoke, leather, and subtle fruity undertones. Vietnamese oud is often considered more refined and delicate than other varieties, with a smoother, slightly sweet and elegant profile that still retains the signature animalic, resinous depth of agarwood. Used primarily as a base note, it brings intensity, longevity, and luxurious depth to oriental, woody, and amber compositions.

History & Production: Agarwood forms when Aquilaria trees become infected by a specific mold, triggering the tree to produce a dark, aromatic resin that saturates the heartwood—transforming otherwise scentless wood into the precious material known as oud. Vietnam has a long history of agarwood harvesting, with records dating back centuries, and its oud is particularly valued for its quality and nuanced aroma. The material is then distilled into oud oil or used as resinous wood chips for incense, though due to rarity and cost, many modern fragrances use reconstructed oud accords. In fragrance design, Vietnamese oud pairs beautifully with rose, saffron, sandalwood, amber, and spices, creating a luxurious, sensual signature—the scent of resinous wood infused with time, warmth, and quiet opulence.
