Dog-rose (Rosa canina) is a delicate, wild-rose note in perfumery that captures the natural, airy freshness of hedgerow roses growing untamed across countryside landscapes. Its scent is lighter and more transparent than cultivated roses, blending soft floral petals, gentle green facets, and a faint fruity tartness reminiscent of rose hips. Like most roses, its delicate petals yield very little usable oil, so Dog-rose in perfumery is an olfactory interpretation rather than a direct extract. Perfumers recreate its scent using light rose molecules (such as phenethyl alcohol), green notes, and subtle fruity accents to suggest its airy, wild character.
